Every parent is automatically a member of Parent Council
We rely on parent volunteers to achieve the mission of the School. The Council consists of the Parent Council Co-chairs, Upper, Middle and Lower School Co-coordinators, Grade Representatives and Committees. Parent Council activities include (but are not limited to):
Arranging drivers for field trips
Organizing special events (class socials, Staff Appreciation Day)
Facilitating communication between and among parents, faculty and staff
Staff and classroom support
Parents are welcome to contact any of the Officers or Committee Chairs to volunteer their time.
Parent Council hosts and assists with events at the School throughout the year. Some of those events include:
First Day Flowers
This is a wonderful Harley tradition. Students bring a single flower on the first day of school. Coordinators will ask 3-4 parents from each division to help collect and arrange the flowers in the Wilson Gallery and Lower School.
Staff Appreciation Day
Staff and Faculty Appreciation Day occurs in May. It is an all day event whereby parents appreciate staff efforts by supplying breakfast and lunch for the entire faculty and staff. Parents supply food for breakfast, lunch and snacks and volunteers are needed to decorate the school, organize and coordinate the food, and serve meals to the staff and children.
Parent Council Parent Coffees
Parent Council sponsors two or three Parent Council Coffees per school year. These informal Coffees are open to all parents across all divisions. Room Reps and Coordinators should plan on attending at least one of these Coffees per year; they are a wonderful opportunity to connect with parents in other divisions, learn valuable information about Harley community events and ask and answer questions. Information about these Coffees will be supplied to you by the Parent Council Co-Chairs.
Summer Chicken BBQ
This is a fun summer potluck gathering providing an opportunity for the Harley community to reconnect and meet new families. Volunteers are needed to help set up, serve food, and clean up afterwards.
Last Day Lemonade
The entire school is invited to celebrate the joys of the past school year and to bid farewell to friends and teachers for the summer. This event is run by the Development Office. Parent volunteers will be needed to supply home-baked treats.
Lower School Events
Immediately following Pageant the community is invited for deserts and snacks. Volunteers will be needed to provide food for the event. Volunteer to bring food
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
The Lower School Parent Council organizes a day of volunteer service for students and families. It takes place in the Harley Dining Hall on the MLK holiday Monday. The committee will investigate various causes and organizations to support and coordinate the day’s activities. In Middle School students volunteer for a day of service away from school as planned by a MS Parent Council Representative. Upper School students may volunteer to help in the Lower School MLK day event. Volunteer for this event
Lower School Dance
This fabulous event is a chance for the entire Lower School to come together and have some fun. The Dance Committee organizes food, fun and music for this party. Volunteer for this event
Middle and Upper School Events
The MS/US Coffeehouses are informal evenings of songs, music, poetry, and drama performed by Harley students. The Coffeehouse Committee coordinates contributions of baked goods and beverages and sells these at the Spring and Fall Coffeehouses. Proceeds from the Coffeehouses go directly to the Drama and Music departments.
Divisional Parent Coffees–The Lower and Middle School Division Heads hold Parent Coffees for their divisions regularly throughout the school year. Room Reps and Coordinators should plan on attending at least one of these Coffees per year; they are a wonderful opportunity to connect with parents within your division, answer questions, and impart news. Information about these Coffees will be supplied to you by the Lower and Middle School Division Heads.
Immediately following the Candlelight Ceremony the community is invited to the Dining Hall to share a meal and celebrate with friends. Candlelight is for Middle and Upper school students only. Parent volunteers will be needed in the Dining Hall to help set-up for the meal and take down decorations afterwards.
Other Parent Support
The decorations on the Lower School Centrum bulletin board create a wonderful Harley environment by setting the mood when children and adults enter the Lower School hallways. This is a great volunteer opportunity to be creative. The committee will work with the Lower School Division Head to showcase upcoming events.
The Material Resources Committee provides laminating, copying, and other teacher support throughout the year.
Lower School Publishing
The Publishing Committee volunteers transform all Lower School handwritten manuscripts into finished, bound books.
The Library Help assists the librarian with various tasks throughout the year.
