Sand Mandala at Harley
2/25/2010
The Harley School will host Lama Venerable Tenzin Yignyen, a Tibetan monk, as he returns to the School to create another sand mandala. The public is invited to watch him work at The Harley School, 1981 Clover Street, from 9 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. daily on March 3, 5, 8, and 10. Visitors will need to sign in at the main entrance upon arrival.
Lama Venerable Tenzin Yignyen will be re-creating the “Buddha of Infinite Compassion.” The “Buddha of Infinite Compassion” represents compassion for all beings. This is the fourth year Lama Venerable Tenzin Yignyen has created a sand mandala at Harley. The piece is made up by laying millions of grains of colored sand to form intricate geometric shapes and symbols.
The dismantling ceremony of the sand mandala will be held on the afternoon of March 26 at 12:35. During the dismantling, the sand will be swept up and given to the audience, then put into Allens Creek. The ceremony serves as a reminder for people to cherish their time with each other and not take life for granted.
Lama Tenzin was ordained by the Dalai Lama in 1969 and teaches and leads meditation courses at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. He has taught and constructed sand mandalas at educational institutions and art museums in Russia, Mongolia, and the U.S., including The Natural Museum of History in Los Angeles, St. Lawrence College, and Cornell University.
