Harley’s Reunion gatherings have been on hiatus for the past two years, but from the looks of the June 17 and 18 weekend, they have been greatly missed. We had more than 200 guests which included alumni ranging from the class of 1952 all the way up to the class of 2019 and former and current faculty. Events, including several class-sponsored gatherings outside of the school itinerary made a robust weekend for reconnecting. In order to keep us safe and healthy, the majority of events were held outside in the big tent, and overall everyone in attendance felt safe and had a ball!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Reunion celebration.

If you are celebrating Reunion in 2023 (classes ending in 3 and 8), please get in touch with Karen Saludo at ksaludo@harleyschool.org so we can start planning for June 16 and 17, 2023.

Students may create independent studies with supervising teachers throughout their Upper School experience or, during Grade 12, they can design Capstone projects—intensive collaborations with Harley faculty and off-campus mentors—involving rigorous academic study and culminating in public presentations. They are empowered to create their own curriculum, set goals, and work on time management skills in order to accomplish their objectives.

Independent Studies run the gamut from The Psychology of Sports to Furniture Design to The Neuroimaging of Alzheimer’s Disease. Capstones, meanwhile, are as diverse as the students who pursue them: Fictional Rochester, Autobiographical Art, Biomimicry Education, Organic Fuel, and Rochester Refugees.

Indicative of Upper School curiosity and creativity, pursuits such as these distinguish our graduates in college. Through deep dives of this sort, Harley students master more than speaking, writing, and computing: they learn to communicate, advocate, collaborate, organize, listen, and empathize.
