Diane R. Doniger Parent Volunteer Service Award

The Diane Doniger, P ’95, ’97 Award was established in 1997 to recognize Diane’s efforts and dedicated years of service to The Harley School. An active parent volunteer, she represented Parent Council on the Board of Trustees, was instrumental in organizing the Harley Sale, and oversaw Harley’s Yearbook 2000 capital campaign. This award is presented to the parent who best exemplifies the spirit Diane has shown in her endless hours of service to the Harley community.

2022 Recipient: Amy Brand, P ’25

Amy has been a Harley parent since 2015 when her child Ollie ’25 started in Grade 3. She was a Room Representative for Grades 4 and 5 and is currently a Room Representative for Grade 9. She served three years as Parent Council Co-Chair, leading through the years of the proposed merger with Allendale Columbia School and the pandemic, and she has been an active member of the Development Committee.

As a member of the Community Support Team, created during the pandemic, Amy advocated for the parent community.

        • Amy created Wizarding Night at Harley, a magical event that grows more awe-inspiring each year.
        • She reimagined both Blast! and Wizarding Night to create successful at-home experiences for both events to maintain a feeling of togetherness when we had to be physically apart.
        • She provides costume and prop assistance to theater performances and is on the Grandparents and Special Friends Day Committee.
        • She is a member of the Blast! committee and helps bring the theme to life to create a memorable experience at the silent auction and the gala.
        • Amy designs merchandise for the school store and is assisting in its renovation.
        • She has run outdoor pop-up shops so the community can purchase Harley gear when access to the building has been limited due to COVID.
        • Amy has mentored the current Parent Council Co-Chairs and continues to support them in their leadership, offering guidance and advice.
        • She volunteers at many Harley events and also creates beautiful floral arrangements for First Day Flowers, EAT Day (Employee Appreciation Time), and Blast!.

Our school is enriched by Amy and the generous sharing of her time. An incredible mother and friend, she embodies the Heart of Harley.

Our Upper School is filled with formal and informal opportunities for students to take on leadership roles. Whether following passions or learning new skills, student-driven opportunities take many shapes.

  • Independent study: one trimester, full year, and multi-year projects have included automating our solar chimneys, coding handmade musical instruments, or developing a class on financial literacy for underserved high school students.
  • Serving on student council:
  • STEM: Climate curriculum program, biomimicry program, NASA Hunch program

At Harley, our students learn how to evaluate social systems in order to identify complex problems in society through a lens of social justice. They take a hands-on approach to working for a fair, equitable society by researching, exploring and evaluating different perspectives, and offering solutions—both theoretical and practical.

Our faculty integrate social justice into our broader curriculum to assist students in gaining a foundational knowledge about what makes a democracy function. By gaining skills in ideating supportive pathways they become more exposed and experienced to how communities can undergo healing and restorative actions.

Students may create independent studies with supervising teachers throughout their Upper School experience or, during Grade 12, they can design Capstone projects—intensive collaborations with Harley faculty and off-campus mentors—involving rigorous academic study and culminating in public presentations. They are empowered to create their own curriculum, set goals, and work on time management skills in order to accomplish their objectives.

Independent Studies run the gamut from The Psychology of Sports to Furniture Design to The Neuroimaging of Alzheimer’s Disease. Capstones, meanwhile, are as diverse as the students who pursue them: Fictional Rochester, Autobiographical Art, Biomimicry Education, Organic Fuel, and Rochester Refugees.

Indicative of Upper School curiosity and creativity, pursuits such as these distinguish our graduates in college. Through deep dives of this sort, Harley students master more than speaking, writing, and computing: they learn to communicate, advocate, collaborate, organize, listen, and empathize.
