New York State has set aggressive goals for our electric grid, to achieve 70% renewable electricity targets by 2030. One path the state has authorized enables local municipalities to participate in, and accelerate the transition through Community Choice Aggregation.

The presentation will describe Community Choice Aggregation and how it can be effectively used to implement community solar projects. Several local communities are implementing programs and will be highlighted.

Our speaker:

Sue Hughes-Smith has been an environmental educator for 20 years, joining the Public Health Department at SUNY Brockport in 2007 as an adjunct professor of Environmental Health. In addition, she volunteers her time advocating for climate action. Sue serves on the Monroe County Climate Action Plan Advisory Committee and is the NE co-coordinator of Diversity and Inclusion for Citizens’ Climate Lobby. She co-founded the Climate Solutions Accelerator of the Genesee-Finger Lakes Region and a small business, Roctrity. Roctricity is the local program manager for Community Choice Aggregation programs and is facilitating the implementation of cost-saving, community-wide, renewable electricity programs in 10 municipalities. Sue resides in Brighton with her husband, Craig, and their five children.

Co-sponsored by Rochester Youth Climate Leaders and The Harley School

Students may create independent studies with supervising teachers throughout their Upper School experience or, during Grade 12, they can design Capstone projects—intensive collaborations with Harley faculty and off-campus mentors—involving rigorous academic study and culminating in public presentations. They are empowered to create their own curriculum, set goals, and work on time management skills in order to accomplish their objectives.

Independent Studies run the gamut from The Psychology of Sports to Furniture Design to The Neuroimaging of Alzheimer’s Disease. Capstones, meanwhile, are as diverse as the students who pursue them: Fictional Rochester, Autobiographical Art, Biomimicry Education, Organic Fuel, and Rochester Refugees.

Indicative of Upper School curiosity and creativity, pursuits such as these distinguish our graduates in college. Through deep dives of this sort, Harley students master more than speaking, writing, and computing: they learn to communicate, advocate, collaborate, organize, listen, and empathize.
