THE HARLEY SCHOOL ANNOUNCES, DAVID GARRISON, M.D., NEWEST MEMBER OF THE HEALTH ADVISORY BOARD

Board Members Will Advise School Leadership on Steps to Ensure Health of School Community

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (July 20, 2020) — Today, The Harley School announced the appointment of the newest member to the school’s new Health Advisory Board.

David Garrison, M.D.: University of Rochester Medical Center,  Department of Psychiatry

Garrison is currently an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC). He serves as the Medical Director of Inpatient Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Medical Director of C/A Mobile Crisis Team at URMC.

Over the coming months, board members will advise The Harley School leadership on steps to take in preparation for the 2020-21 school year and for summer programming. Measures ranging from proper cleaning and disinfection protocols, distancing in the classroom and camps, appropriate student flow and group sizes, use of masking measures, and temperature readings will be considered.

The board members will also assist in interpreting guidance, mandates, and regulations from New York State, Monroe County, and the Monroe County Health Department.

Students may create independent studies with supervising teachers throughout their Upper School experience or, during Grade 12, they can design Capstone projects—intensive collaborations with Harley faculty and off-campus mentors—involving rigorous academic study and culminating in public presentations. They are empowered to create their own curriculum, set goals, and work on time management skills in order to accomplish their objectives.

Independent Studies run the gamut from The Psychology of Sports to Furniture Design to The Neuroimaging of Alzheimer’s Disease. Capstones, meanwhile, are as diverse as the students who pursue them: Fictional Rochester, Autobiographical Art, Biomimicry Education, Organic Fuel, and Rochester Refugees.

Indicative of Upper School curiosity and creativity, pursuits such as these distinguish our graduates in college. Through deep dives of this sort, Harley students master more than speaking, writing, and computing: they learn to communicate, advocate, collaborate, organize, listen, and empathize.
