Penguins=Math in Action

One of our Primary (combined Kindergarten and Grade 1) classrooms recently started a new unit about penguins that lasts for several weeks. Taking a thematic approach to elementary learning is a vehicle for teaching all subject areas in a hands-on and active way. This also helps our faculty differentiate ways for our students to learn.

We Empower Our Students to Become Confident, Lifelong Learners

In recognition of his career as a physician, researcher, and businessman, John Mills ’57 was appointed an Officer in the Order of Australia in 2015 for distinguished service to medicine in the field of infectious diseases, particularly HIV and AIDS, to medical administration, and to the development of Australia’s biotechnology industry. Following his graduation from Harvard Medical School, John held a professorship at the University of California, San Francisco. Recruited to Australia, from 1991 – 2002, he was managing director of the Burnet Institute for Medical Research in Melbourne.

Science students recently spent some time sorting vermicompost (“red wiggler” worm compost) to separate the worms, worm cocoons, and other bugs from the nutrient rich organic material (worm castings) that the worms created.

Harley School students give back for Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The Harley School hosted our annual day of volunteer service Monday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. day to demonstrate how small acts of civic engagement benefit the community.Students collaborated with families from the Horizons program to participate in various tasks such as making lemonade, benefiting childhood cancer and creating Hershey hugs and kisses bags for kids at Golisano Children’s Hospital.Other students collected bags of goods for a local food cupboard and counted coins to support urban agriculture and food security.
